Kilauea History

  • The volcano is only about 300,000 years old
  • Since June 27th 2014 lava has oozed out of Kilauea into Pahoa
  • In 1823, a bubbling lava lake rose to the crater or caldera 
  • In 1924, the lava lake sank deep into the volcano
  • Many eruptions followed this event

  • Also, in 1983, many violent eruptions came out of Kilauea
  • If this eruption lasts as long as some of the eruptions in history,
  • many lives could be lost and structures could be destroyed
