PRESENTATION OUTLINE

1.pH Scale & Cause of Acid Rain

  • The pH Scale is a measure of how acidic or basic a substance is.
  • Acid Rain is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air

2.Acid Rain. Difference From Normal Rain

  • Acid Rain is rainfall made sufficiently acidic by atmospheric pollution that it causes environmental harm.
  • Acid Rain-pH=4.2
  • Normal Rain-pH=5.6

3.What Environmental Things Contribute To Acid Rain?

  • Loss of fish and natural defenses from plants/trees making them vulnerable to diseases

4.HOW ARE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DRASTIC INCREASE IN THE ACIDITY OF WATER

  • People increase acid rain by air pollution from factories which contain chemicals like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen, when mixed with rain water it causes acid rain

5.HOW WILL THIS IMPACT THE SURROUNDING ECOSYSTEMS?

  • It will impact by making them lose their habitat thus exposing themselves to acid rain and other predators

6.HOW CAN WE "SEE" THE ACTUAL EFFECTS OF ACID RAIN ON OUR CITIES?

  • Acidification of lakes and streams, accelerates the decay of building materials and paints

7.DOES ANYONE BENEFIT FROM ACID RAIN GOING UNCHECKED?

  • No.It causes dangerous outcomes.

8.WHAT ARE THREE SOLUTIONS THAT PEOPLE CAN DO TODAY TO HELP REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF ACIDITY IN THE ATMOSPHERIC WATER?

  • Understand the problem, conserve energy, minimize the car miles
