THINGS I LEARNED AT CAMP
Lots of inappropriate language
Stinging nettle in the face isn't fun
Collect calls aren't actually cheap
Pulling pranks is hilarious
Being pranked is not as fun
It wasn't that I learned new inappropriate language; I just started using it out loud. I also got my face and arms covered in welts, and created a very expensive phone bill my mom received the following month.

ALSO: R&B AND RAP EXIST
JUST BECAUSE MOM DOESN'T LIKE IT DOESN'T MEAN IT'S BAD

I SANG IT TO HER
TO TELL MY MOM ABOUT IT WITHOUT A TITLE OR ARTIST,

WEEKS PASSED
WITH LOTS OF BILLY JOEL
I had three Billy Joel cassettes that I listened to over and over: Piano Man, The Stranger, and The Nylon Curtain.

SHE TOLD ME.

"IT'S THE FIRST ONE ON THE TAPE,"
SHE SAID.

THINGS I DID NEXT:
Ran to my bedroom
Got my Walkman
Put on my headphones
Took off the cellophane wrapper
Plugged that sucker in

6. GOT REALLY CONFUSED.
THIS BOTH WAS, AND WAS NOT, THE SONG I LOVED.
It had the same words, but musically, it didn't sound right, and didn't resonate with me the same way it had at camp.

AS DISAPPOINTED AS I WAS.
THE GESTURE MEANT A LOT AND I DIDN'T WANT MY MOM TO BE

SHE'D TAKEN THE TIME TO FIND IT,
SO I LISTENED TO THE ENTIRE 'BEST OF' TAPE.

THAT PHRASE IS FOREIGN TO MOST 11-YEAR-OLDS.

OTHER FOREIGN CONCEPTS:
"Laying with" someone
"Getting it on"
A bajillion other intimate descriptions

TO ADD TO THE CONFUSION,
I STILL THOUGHT MAYBE I'D REMEMBERED THE SONG WRONG
