King John. He was the king of England from 1199- 1216
The 25 barons. They were entrusted by the terms of the Manga Carta. There were 25 barons so that there was an odd number of people to avoid split voting and because 25 is a highly significant number in the bible.
King John first lost his power over the people of England in 1207 when he had an argument with the pope over who should appoint the Archbishop of Canterbury.
The pope then excommunicated the King and put the country of England in an interdict. After this King John behaved even worse by raising illegal taxes for his Benefit and hiring foreign knights to fight his people.
The barons then forced the King to sign a charter of human rights called the Magna Carta.
In the Magna Carta, some of the laws include no person will be imprisoned without a proper trial, no person will take goods without immediate payment, and no person will be denied justice.
King John abused his power as a king. For example he raised illegal taxes without permission from the barons, went against the feudal law, and imprisoned barons without trial. As he was abusing his power, the barons made him seal a charter called magna carta.
It is important because we can learn to not abuse our power as there are always consequences for our actions.
King John agreed to respect the rights of the English people which changed England quite a bit. However, the later kings after King John didn't didn't always follow everything in the Magna Carta.
A modern event like this one was in World War II. There was a German dictator named Adolf Hitler who abused his power as a leader and made all of Germany suffer for his actions against Jewish people.
