Who Was There?

  • King John. He was the king of England from 1199- 1216
  • The 25 barons. They were entrusted by the terms of the Manga Carta. There were 25 barons so that there was an odd number of people to avoid split voting and because 25 is a highly significant number in the bible.

When and Where Did It Happen?

  • On June 15 1215 in England king John signed the Magna Carta.
  • This took place in a small town called Runneymede.

What Happened?

  • King John first lost his power over the people of England in 1207 when he had an argument with the pope over who should appoint the Archbishop of Canterbury.

What Happened?

  • The pope then excommunicated the King and put the country of England in an interdict. After this King John behaved even worse by raising illegal taxes for his Benefit and hiring foreign knights to fight his people.

What happened?

  • The barons then forced the King to sign a charter of human rights called the Magna Carta.
  • In the Magna Carta, some of the laws include no person will be imprisoned without a proper trial, no person will take goods without immediate payment, and no person will be denied justice.

What Was The Conflict?

  • King John abused his power as a king. For example he raised illegal taxes without permission from the barons, went against the feudal law, and imprisoned barons without trial. As he was abusing his power, the barons made him seal a charter called magna carta.

Why Was This Conflict Important?

  • It is important because we can learn to not abuse our power as there are always consequences for our actions.
  • King John agreed to respect the rights of the English people which changed England quite a bit. However, the later kings after King John didn't didn't always follow everything in the Magna Carta.

The Negative Outcomes

  • The King got England in trouble with the church.
  • Many people like the relatives of the barons were tortured by King John for not siding with him
  • King John raised taxes without the barons consent, and so the peasants had to pay almost double for king johns own welfare.

The Positive Outcomes

  • The Magna Carta started democracy in England.
  • It's the reason why Canada has human rights and democracy.

  • What was the Magna Carta? It was a charter made to ensure that the rights of all people were followed.
  • What rights did they believe all people had? They believed that all people should be tried in a proper court before being arrested.
  • King John was a king in England who got the entire country in trouble with the church for his own actions.

A modern conflict

  • A modern event like this one was in World War II. There was a German dictator named Adolf Hitler who abused his power as a leader and made all of Germany suffer for his actions against Jewish people.
