KINGS AND QUEENS OF THE ELIZABETHAN ERA

William Shakespeare was born in 1564, during the Elizabethan Era. Elizabeth I became Queen of England in 1558, and ruled until her death in 1603.

The country she inherited from her sister, Mary, was poor and with no real leaders. The people were divided by the disputes between Catholics and Protestants. England became poor by foreign wars.

Elizabeth was young when she came to the throne but she was also proud and clever. She set on restoring peace at home, she encouraged the building of ships to defend England of foreign attacks.

Peace at home meant that people could work in peace, confident that they would be able to enjoy the rewards of their labour.

Elizabeth loved music, dancing and theatre and encouraged art and learning generally. She was intelligent and well educated.

Soon to be Kings from other places wanted to be with Queen Elizabeth, to gain power sooner.

William Shakespeare had a talent, which was creating poetry and plays. Queen Elizabeth loved him for that and spoiled him with her money, to continuously keep writing.

In 1588, Elizabeth's navy defeated the great Spanish Armada which was sent to conquer England. Her sea captains made discoveries around the world. They brought back treasures and began colonising newly found lands of America.

After the death of his love, Queen Elizabeth, this poems and plays all turned into heart breaks and tragedies.
