  • Was the son of Mars.
  • Killed his brother, Remus.
  • Was deified after death as the god, Quirinus
  • Stole women form the Sabines
  • Credited with establishing the Senate

Numa Pompilius

715 - 673 B.C.

Numa Pompilius (Cont.)

  • Credited with establishing religion.
  • Credited with a calendar reform of 10 to 12 months.
  • Credited with establishing Roman boundaries.
  • Had Sabine origins
  • Was a very peaceful ruler

Tullus Hostilius

673 - 641 B.C.

Tullus Hostilius (Cont.)

  • Just as hostile as Numa was peaceful.
  • Credited with building the Curia Hostilia.
  • Alba Longa was defeated and subsequently destroyed during his reign.
  • Won wars with Fidenae and Venii and the sabines.
  • Died of Jupiter's anger for doing a ceremony of protection incorrectly.

641 - 616 B.C.

  • Credited with the way Romans declared war.
  • Added the Aventine and Janiculum hills.
  • Credited with establishing the Port Ostia.
  • Took the town of Politorium twice.
  • Built Rome's first prison, The Mamertine prison.

Tarquinius Priscus

616 - 579 B.C.

Tarquinius Priscus (Cont.)

  • Assassinated by Ancus Marcius' sons.
  • An eagle took and replaced his hat when he first came to Rome.
  • Added 100 men to the senate from the highest minor families.
  • Won a war with the Etruscan reinforced Sabines.
  • Subsequently subdued and annexed Nomentum, Medullia, and 5 others.

Servius Tullius

579 - 535 B.C.

  • Established that a citizens' tribe is determined by where they lived.
  • Aded the Quirinal, Viminal, and Esquiline hills.
  • Credited with building the Temple of Diana.
  • Credited with the first walls, but they were not built until later.
  • The first to be elected by the Senate alone.

Tarqiuinus Superbus

535 - 509 B.C.

Tarquinius Superbus (Cont.)

  • Made Rome the head of the Latin League.
  • Built the Cloaca Maximus, a large sewer/drainage ditch.
  • Was the last Roman King.
  • His downfall was his son Sextus.
  • Started of his reign by killing a number of leading senators.
