Location

  • The Kiowa region is located in the Panhandle of Texas.

Diet,Dwelling,and Lifestyle

  • The main food for the Kiowa tribe was buffalo.
  • They also traded with neighboring tribes for corn.
  • Other food they ate consisted of small animals, fruit and nuts.
  • Their dwellings were tepees made of buffalo hide.
  • Kiowa were warriors and hunters. They were nomads and very poor.

Kiowa Culture

  • The women were in charge of the home; the men were the hunters/warriors.
  • Their art consisted of Indian bead work and buffalo hide paintings.
  • This tribe was big in storytelling/they have lots of legends.
  • Religion - Kiowa gave respect to the sun and other natural forces.
  • They had ceremonies and dances to celebrate.

Interesting Facts

  • They fought to prove their courage, not destroy or take over territory.
  • Women wore deerskin dresses/men wore leather leggings.Both wore moccasins.
  • They did not wear feather war bonnets, they wore hats made of otter pelts. 
  • They communicated with other tribes using Plains Sign Language.
  • They used dogs to help carry their goods from place to place.
