GROWING PROCESS

  • Climate with plentiful sunshine, rain, and right amount of chill.
  • Fertile soils with pH levels between 5 and 6.8
  • Growing season is a long 240 days a year.
  • June to August kiwifruit start to grow again.
  • Kiwis grow in New Zealand.

CONT.

  • Flower buds appear & honey bees pollinate them.
  • The vines then begin transform into small berries.
  • In Jan. the kiwi grows an extreme amount.
  • Kiwis are havested between March and June.
  • They are carefully picked by growing teams.

HISTORY

  • Originally found in China.
  • They were considered a delicacy because of their appearance.
  • It slowly found its way to other countries and was called Chinese gooseberry.
  • In 1962 the plant was named kiwi after the bird found in New Zealand.

Nutritional Facts
The average kiwi is 42 calories. It contains more Vitamin C per ounce than other fruits. Reduces risk of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

The good: This food is very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. It is also a good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Potassium and Copper, and a very good source of Vitamin C and Vitamin K.

The bad: A large portion of the calories in this food come from sugars.

Easy to include in your daily diet. Can be enjoyed alone, on fruit pizzas, in smoothies, and much more.

Purchasing
Look for firm kiwis that yield to gentle pressure, and have no blemishes.

Storage
Ripen at room temperature. Speed up ripening by putting kiwis in a paper bag with apple or banana. Use within a week.
