I think that the biggest scenario of ignorance versus knowledge is that of leadership, and the logic of the beast. Piggy and Simon knew that they needed leadership in order to maintain stability, but Jack was too proud and self- conceited to see through that knowledge, therefore making him ignorant. The beast was all in their heads, and Simon knew this. However, the other boys were ignorant to the logic of their conscience and chose to give into fear and their instinctive feelings. We can conclude that Golding wanted us to know that by ignoring knowledge and common sense we can be blinded by our fear, or pride and be made ignorant towards humanity.
Some of the boys had a lot of knowledge on what to do and how to survive, others were making ignorant and cowardly decisions that were lead to by the destruction of their civilization. They had many knowledgable decisions, such as making a civilization, appointing a leader, using the conch as a horn, and using piggy a glasses as a fire starter. However after a while and they split into their own tribes and they are all trying to be the leader, their actions turned into ignorant ones rather than knowledgable ones. Their minds had switched into fending for themselves. For example, Jack started his own tribe, and started hunting the others on the island...
...It just goes to show that you can have knowledge of how to do something but if you do not use your knowledge in the right way it can lead to ignorant destructive decisions. Civilization can also be a positive thing, such as, coming together and using everyone's knowledge. It can also affect the use of ignorance because if some people are not happy with the decisions, ignorance will start to show up in their actions.
When civilization goes away, human nature comes into play. When the boys are on the island fear comes into play, which pulls them towards violence. The boys become savages with no adults watching them. The boys think the beast is real. They even give it sacrifices.
Does Golding ever question what it means to be civilized? Or is he pretty comfortable with the categories? Do you believe that everyone is either civilized or not? Can you be both?
In the book, knowledge is based off of how aware the boys are of their fear of their situation and the unknown. The ignorance that some of the boys have comes from them not admitting they are fearful, and end up doing reckless things. When the boys recognize their fear and try to defeat it by using logic, that is knowledge. But when the boys are choosing to be reckless and refuse their fear, that is ignorance. By being in-depth with their feelings is the relation between knowledge and ignorance.
We believe that ignorance and savagery are closely related. The relation we see is that ignorance is denial of logic and knowledge. Without the use of logic and knowledge an individual can be blinded by pride, fear, or personal instinctive emotions and become savage. The boys were scared and homesick when they where on the island, we believe that was the pure motivation for their attacks and defense. A great example of ignorance and savagery was the attack on Simon.
