PRESENTATION OUTLINE

The Hazlewood case

Also known as the Kuhlmeier case

Three girls were asked to write for the school newspaper

They wrote about teen pregnancy and divorce.

The school censored the articles

The girls said it challenged their 1st amendment and sued the school

The court disagreed with the girls

And sided with the school

Since the school newspaper was not a

Public forum, they couldn't write whatever they wanted

Bottom Line:

Schools CAN censor school newspapers
