WORKING CONDITIONS AND WORKERS

CONDITIONS

  • 80% of society was working class
  • Only natural light was let in the factories
  • Dangerous machines
  • Crowded
  • Dusty and dirty

HOURS & WAGES

  • 14-16 hours a day
  • 6 days a week / no holidays
  • $1.25 a day for unskilled workers
  • Women and children made 1/3 of that price

FACTORY ACT OF 1833

  • No child under the age of 9 could work
  • Children ages 9-12 can not work more than 8 hours
  • Ages 13-17 can not work more than 12 hours
  • Direct result of Sadler committee

MINES ACT OF 1842

  • Resulted from the Ashley mines commission
  • No women or children where let in the mines to work

10 HOURS ACT OF 1847

  • Further restricts women or children ( under the age of 17 )
  • Could work no more than 10 hors a day
