La Garita Caldera was estimated that it erupted 28.1 million years ago.

THE DEADLY FLU

There was a flu that killed almost half of the town. It took place in 1918.

There was a man who was lost once in the 1900's and survived in La Garita wilderness for two months alone.

About 35 miles of the continental divide was believed to be a camp site for a Native American tribe!

SUPERVOLCANO

  • La Garita Caldera was a huge volcano that was believed to be the worlds biggest volcano.

La Garita is another word for "The Lookout" Because there was usually a lookout for the Native American tribes so they can spot strangers or enemies approaching.

La Garita is also the source of at least several major eruptions over a time span of 1.5 million years.
