La Pampa Province

by lillian baca

Grassland biome Located in Argentina between the Atlantic coast to the Andean hills.

why its unique

  • the biome is a wide 300,00 sq. miles wide. The average temperature of the Province is 18°C, with a dry season during December. the weather is mainly hot and humid with constant winds. Most plants were favorable to wetlands but adapted to the humid grassland. Trees aren't native because the humidity would cause many forest fires. The pampas has the one of the richest soil, perfect for crops. Grasslands receive their rich soil since rainfall is the lowest in the middle of continents which is where grasslands are located. because of humid heat, animals learn to burrow for shelter even owls burrow!

food web

human impacts/risk factors

  • a limiting factor in la pampas province is food production. production in beef and crops have constantly increased. this limiting factor is population density dependent because to spawn more crops and cattle, there needs to be an already large span of species to breed. another limiting factor is loss of habitats. the loss of habitats are caused by the colonizing of natural grasslands to be transformed into cultivated lands. this forces ecosystems to mingle with another or deteriorate. being a population density dependent limiting factor, it rises competition for food and shelter. for example, the crucial herbivorous pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus celer) in risk of extinction because its prey is slowly depleting causing a rise of its predators. to include, because of these new cultivated lands, inorganic pesticides are introduced. these pesticides deprive the nutrient rich soil of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous. which all living things rely on.
  • even so freshwater is being contaminated with the horrid pesticides. i propose to correct these ecosystems, we should stop cultivating la pampas lands and ensure any colonizing by establishing a national preservation park.
