Accident Prevention

Accidents can result from:
An indifferent attitude
Failure to use common sense
Failure to follow instructions

REMEMBER: An accident can injure more than one student.

the mentor's role

1. Be familiar with safety equipment and exits.
2. Be familiar with all lab equipment, hot plates, etc.
3. Be thoroughly familiar with every activity and any hazards associated with any activity: hot water, hot glassware, possible splashing, skin irritants, etc. Ask if you don’t understand the procedure.
4. Check bench area and make sure all materials are not close to edge.
5. No open flames in lab.
6. Use tongs or hot mitts when handling hot glassware.
7. Do not allow students to handle hot glassware or to touch hot plates.
8. Do not allow students to turn on Bunsen burners or use matches or strikers.
9. Do not allow students to use blades or knives. --Always cut away from yourself and others
10. Never allow students to:
-Play tricks
-Horseplay
-Run
-Throws things
-Turn things on
-Run with scissors
11. Remind all students of safety instructions.

Personal protection

Eye protection
Wear goggles whenever working in the lab.
Students with glasses can wear visagoggs if more comfortable.
If a student wears contact lenses, mark goggles with a sticker.

Personal protection

Clothing
No open toed shoes.
No loose jewelry, clothing, or long hair.
No bare midriffs.
Shorts are OK.

Personal protection

gloves
Whenever using skin irritants or solvents: hexanes, acetone, alcohol, etc.
No latex gloves. We will have nitrile gloves.
Remove all gloves and dispose of them in trash before leaving lab.
Do not let students reuse or share gloves.
Use gloves whenever instructed to do so by room instructors.

Hand washing

Wash hands after each activity.
Wash hands before exiting lab before lunch and at the end of the day.
Wash hands if anything irritating comes in contact with the skin.

Handling chemicals, equipment, & glassware

Check glassware for chips, cracks, and chemical residue before use.
Check electrical equipment before use.
Always carry microscopes with two hands.
Treat all chemicals as if they are dangerous.
Do not use solvents near a flame.
When heating chemicals, aim test tubes away from yourself and everyone around you.
If chemicals come in contact with the skin, flush with water, report immediately, and clean with soap and water.

Working with Volatile Solvents

Whenever students are evaporating volatile solvents leave the beaker or flask in a HOOD
Do Not allow students to sniff any volatile solvents

Working with Bacterial Cultures

Suggested Guidelines:

Wash benchtop with disinfectant before and after working with cultures.

Use proper aseptic technique for proper handling of cultures

Wash hands thoroughly after working with bacteria.

Treat all spills with lab disinfectant. Report all spills to the instructor immediately.

Wear lab coats, goggles, and gloves.

Dispose of all contaminated materials in properly labeled biohazardous waste receptacles including disposable gloves.

Communication

Report all accidents.
Report all spills.
Report all broken glassware.
Do not pick up broken glass with your hands.
Inform instructor of any student who is not feeling well.

Laboratory rules

No student is allowed to be in the lab without supervision.
No eating or drinking in the lab.
No storing of food in the lab.
No chewing gum in the lab.
Do not remove any lab equipment or allow students to take any chemicals or equipment out of the lab
No tasting chemicals or mixtures in the lab.
No inhaling chemicals in the lab.

housekeeping

Keep benches free from clutter.
Clean up after every activity.
All materials must be put away before students leave at the end of the day.
All spills must be cleaned up immediately.
Wipe off all lab benches at the end of each day.
Wipe up any water spilled on the floor.
Clean all glassware and equipment after use.
Keep sinks free of paper or any other waste.
Do not dispose of hexanes or acetone down the drain.
