History

  • 1745, Chief Keeshkemun lead Band to Lac du Flambeau
  • Defeated Sioux in battle
  • Treaty of 1854- Reservation established
  • Famous Eagle

Famous Eagle

  • 1861- annual spring expedition
  • Chief Sky found two eaglets
  • Gave one to Dan McCann and named him Old Abe
  • McCann presented Old Abe to Union soldiers
  • Soldiers changed their name from Badgers to War Eagles
  • Carried into battle in: WI, IL, MS, AL,& TN

Old Abe

  • Attended major events across the country
  • Dedicated at the Capitol in Madison
  • Awarded government and military honors
  • 1990- 8th Regiment rededicated Old Abe statue
  • 26 mile trail up in the area with his name

Strawberry Island

  • Sacred island
  • Tribal tradition- "the place of the little people" or spirits
