The Lakota/Sioux were located in the Great Plains, and in the North where present-day South Dakota is.

Like other American Indians, the Lakota have strong ties to nature and the spirit and belief in many different gods.

Because of ongoing warfare the tribal group was forced up North, causing them to become warlike.

WAYS OF LIFE

  • The children look to their elders for wisdom.
  • The wife is in charge of the household.
  • It is very important to have the house traditionally done.

DAKOTA, LAKOTA, & NAKOTA

were the three different dialect groups of the Sioux Language.

Bear skin was used for robes and winter clothes, while the oil was used for paint. Antelope horns were used for weapons and tools.

The turtle's shell was used as a calendar. All turtles have 13 sections on the top of their backs representing the 13 moons. The 28 sections surrounding the bottom of the shell top represents the number of days in each moon.

Stories were written about beavers, and the majority of children's stories were about life lessons.
