WHAT IS A LANDFILL?

  • A landfill is a lined hole in the ground, solid waste is deposited there, then it is covered with soil.
  • Waste is partially decomposed and compressed by its own weight

BENEFITS

  • Closed landfills can be odorlessly turned into a national park
  • It is a highly engineered solution to the problem of waste disposal
  • Methane can be collected, processed, and used as an energy source.

PROBLEMS

  • Landfills must be maintained even after they close.
  • No one wants to live near a landfill, even after it's closed
  • Landfills must be kept dry in order to halt leaching, but dry conditions also slow decomposition
