We are going to talk about some landforms you may not be familiar with in this presentation.

MESA

A Mesa is a landform with a flat top
In Spanish Mesa means table
It is often found in desert areas in the southwest United States
The ancient Anasazi Indians built their homes into the side of a Mesa

PENINSULA

A peninsula is land that is surrounded by water on three sides
The state of Florida is a good example of a peninsula

VALLEY

A valley is a depression or low area between mountains or hills
Often a stream or river makes its course through a valley
The Lewistown area is located in the Juniata Valley which is named for the Juniata River

COAST

A coast is an area of land next to the sea
The United Sjtates has an east and west seacoast
When we go to the beach in New Jersey, Delaware, North Carolina, and other areas; we are going to the eastern seacoast of the United States

PLAIN

Large area of flat land
The Great Plains make up much of the central part of the United States
Much of our countries corn, wheat, and soybeans are grown in this area and that is why it is known as the "Bread Basket of America"

CANYON

Deep river valley with steep sides
The Grand Canyon in Arizona is an example of canyons in the United States

PLATEAU

A plateau is a high, flat area of land that rises steeply above the surrounding land

MOUNTAINS

Mountains are high landforms with steep sides; higher than hills
The Rocky Mountains are located along the west coast of the United States
Sometimes mountains will have snow on top even in summer because of their elevation
