LANDFORMS

BY: BETHANY

BEACH

  • Sandy beaches are mostly made of silica in the form of the mineral quartz
  • Polls reveal that at least 44% of all Americans plan a beach vacation
  • Depending on the type of sediment that makes up the sand, beaches can come in many different colors such as: white, gray, gold-yellow, brown, red and black.

PLAIN

  • Broad and flat, plains are well named. Some appear when glaciers and streams erode away elevated terrain; others spread where rising magma pushes, erupts, and spews
  • The first documented European visit to the Plains was made in 1540 by the Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez. America's interest in the Plains was cemented with its purchase from France in 1803.

CANYONS

  • A canyon is a narrow, steep-walled, and deep valley with or without a perennial stream at the bottom. It is larger than, but otherwise similar to, a gorge.

PLATEAU

  • Plateau, elevated, level or nearly level portion of the earth's surface, larger in summit area than a mountain and bounded on at least one side by steep slopes, occurring on land or in oceans.
  • Many of the world's high plateaus are deserts.

OCEAN

  • Around 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by oceans. The world’s oceans contain enough water to fill a cube with edges over 1000 kilometers (621 miles) in length. Ocean tides are caused by the Earth rotating while the Moon and Sun’s gravitational pull acts on ocean water.

LAKES

  • A lake is an inland body of relatively motionless water that usually has a river or stream feeding into or draining out of it.
  • A lake usually contains freshwater but some can be saltwater.

MOUNTAINS

  • Ben Nevis is also the highest mountain in Great Britain.
  • In some mountainous areas the rivers are permanently frozen. These are called glaciers
