Idea

  • 1975
  • Students with disabilities
  • The case ensures that all children with disabilities are entitled to a free education that is designed to meet their unique needs
  • It is important for teachers to know what is expected of them and the school, as well as know the rights of the students and their parents.

Title IX and Sex Discrimination

  • 1972
  • Title IX covers all state and local agencies that receive ED funds
  • It protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive Federal assistance
  • This law allows teachers and students to know how they are protected when it comes to discrimination based on sex.

Jacob javits GT students ed AcT

  • 1988
  • Gifted and Talented Students
  • The purpose is to create a program that would challenge students in specific areas of innovative strategies, scientific research, and demonstration projects.
  • This is important for teachers to be able to challenge students that might get bored with basic curriculum

Title I

  • 1965
  • This act protects all children and specifically disadvantaged children and gives them the right to an equal high-quality education
  • The result of this title is to improve the academic achievement of the disadvantaged
  • Enables teachers to set proper alignment and expectations against common expecations for academic achievement

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 & 1974

  • 1973 & 1974
  • Students with disabilities
  • Prohibits discrimination against individuals with a disability
  • To ensure teachers don't discriminate againist students with disabilities

Lau v. Nichols

  • 1974
  • Non-English speaking students
  • The purpose is to provide supplemental English instruction to non-English speaking students
  • To adhear to the laws and regulations regarding non-English speaking students
