IDEA

 Individuals with Disability Act

  • Established 1975
  • School children ages 3-21
  • Part A: Basic foundation, definitions are formed throughout this section.
  • Part B: Lays out educational guidlines, states are required by law to educate students with disabilities.

  • Part C: Recognizes need for identifying & reaching very young children with disabilities.
  • Part D: National activities required, provides grants to improve educational & transitional services.

IDEA is important information for teachers because they need to know that all students with disabilities deserve equal opportunities to learn as any other student may have.

Title IX & Sex Discrimination

  • Established in 1972
  • Any US educational programs/activities that receives federal financial assistance.
  • No persons in the US shall on the bais of sex should be excluded inparticipation in or subject to discrimination.

  • Educational program has to be receiving federal financial assistance.
  • Does not just pertain to sports or women.

Teachers need to know about Title IX so they do not discriminate in their classroom & recognize when there is unequal opportunity in their school so they can report it.

Jacob Javits Gifted & Talented

 Students Education Act

  • Established in 1988
  • Pertains to students who are underrepresented in GT programs: economically disadvantaged, limited-English proficient & disabled students.

  • The purpose is to create a program that would challenge students in specific areas of innovative strategies, scientific research & demonstration projects.

This is important because all children deserve an equal opportunity to learn. It also allows teachers to create innovative ways to help students be able to reach full potential in the classroom.

Title I

1Improving The Academic Acheivment Of The Disadvantaged

  • Established in 1965
  • All children in elementary and secondary education
  • Ensure all children have fair, equal & significant opportunities to obtain high quality education.
  • Reach proficiency on state standards.
  • Affording parents substantial & meaningful opportunites to be involved.

It is important for teachers to get parents involved in any way they can. Parent involvement leads to student involvement which equals higher grades.

Section 504

  • Students with disabilities attending schools with federal funding.
  • Federal law designed to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities

It is very important for teachers to know which students have 504 plans. Teachers will better be able to aid students & make them feel safe & comfortable.

  • Pertains to non-english speaking students
  • The purpose is to provide supplemental english instruction to non-english speaking students.

It is important for teachers to know the requirements and history. It also allows for teachers to better connect with students and make their education worthwhile.
