SIMPLICITY

  • keep your design simple
  • focus on what you think is important
  • use few plants and design elements
  • more can always be added later
  • pick 2 or 3 colors and repeat them

  • unbalance & abstract
  • unity & balance through repetition
  • different on each side
  • Japanese garden
  • use paths and walk ways

SYMMETRICAL BALANCE

  • Equally balanced
  • Same shape, height, form & group
  • Mirror image
  • use property lines & other important features
  • High maintenance

Focalization

  • Plants, fountains, pools and other items
  • over use creates complexity & confusion
  • directs visual attention to a point of interest
  • contrasting color or unusual lines
  • paths walkways and strategically placed plants

RHYTHM

  • Illusion of motion & flow
  • repeat color scheme, shape, texture, & line
  • eliminates confusion in the landscape

LINE

  • use sweeping bold lines & curves
  • 5 basic, Rectangular, Arc & tangent,
  • Arch & radii, Arc & Arc, Curvilinear
  • form emphasis
  • create small & large spaces in landscape

SCALE

  • Low scale is relaxing & calming
  • High scale is used to create action
  • keep length, width, & height of plants in mind
  • avoid disproportion in landscape
  • But don't want all the same size plants

PROPORTION

  • pay attention to the size of surroundings
  • Consider plant size
  • Don't want all the same size
  • But not to many different sizes
