Occupation: Animal Companion Veterinarian

The career I chose was Animal Companion Veterinarian. I chose to be an Animal Companion Veterinarian because I've been an animal lover all of my life, and animals bring me such happiness. I want to do anything I can possibly do to help animals, even give them a second chance at life. I want to give back to them after all they've done for me.

EDUCATION SECTIONS

WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR THIS OCCUPATION

To be a veterinarian, you need a bachelor's degree, which will take four years to earn. Then you need to go to Vet school and graduate with a D.V.M degree, which also takes about for years, or more, to achieve(aka a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree). Common majors for veterinarians in college are biology, chemistry, physics, and animal science. I’ll probably major in either biology, animal science, or Zoology.

COLLEGE

WHAT FLORIDA COLLEGE I PLAN TO ATTEND

The college I plan to attend is UF. The reason why I plan to attend UF is because it's the only veterinary school in Florida and UF’s small animal vet hospital is acknowledged all around the US for its excellence. The average unweighted GPA for UF is 3.75, while the average weighted GPA is 4.4. The grades I need are A’s a few B’s. The average SAT score is 1349 and the average ACT score is 30.

COMPENSATION

The average starting annual salary of a Veterinarian is $52,470. The average median salary for a Veterinarian is $88,770. Veterinarians work in veterinary hospitals, I would end up working in a small animal hospital.

DAY - TO - DAY ASPECTS

THE EVERYDAY LIFE OF A VETERINARIAN

Veterinarians commonly wear white lab coats, with a stethoscope around their necks, or veterinary scrubs. Veterinarians have to be on call 24/7 for emergencies. Every day animal companion Veterinarians are giving household pets(cats, dogs, etc.) routine checkups, but there could also be emergencies that cause for immediate surgery on animals. Veterinarians use all sorts of different equipment and technology such as stethoscopes, x-rays, surgical utensils, needles etc. There is a very high possibility that there will be more advanced technology when I graduate high school.

OUTLOOK

The future of veterinarians

Wrap-up Summary

I will certainly consider this career path in the future after this project. The only thing I would probably do different is not be an animal care veterinarian because I would rather work with wild animals, not household pets. This specific type of veterinarian is called a Mammalogist.
