1800's-1920

  • 1859 Oliver Wozencraft promotes idea of irrigating the Colorado River
  • 1865 Lower Colorado basins begin to be put aside for American Indians
  • 1897 Rivers first transbasin project
  • 1919 Grand Canyon national park created

  • 1921 formally known as "Grand River" was now renamed "The Colorado River"
  • Colorado is a Spanish adjective for red
  • Named for the red stilt that travels down stream from the Grand Canyon
