ROMAN ROADS

MATERIALS

  • Flint
  • Gravel
  • Stone Slabs
  • Any other hard materials available.

CONSTRUCTION

  • A middle layer of softer material such as sand or gravel
  • A surface of usually a gravel.
  • The upper layers of the road are finer material well-rammed down.
  • Total depth could reach up 1 to 1.5 m

BUILDERS

Roman legions built most of the roads.

  • The Romans put along their roads miliaria or lapides, “milestones”
  • Inscriptions where they marked the mile where the traveller was on a road
