ADJECTIVES

An adjective is used to describe a noun.
For example: the boy is beautiful.

'Beautiful' is the adjective.

An adjective changes its endings to agree with the noun it describes in both number, case, and gender.

Most adjectives in Latin belong either to the first and second declension or the third declension.

To conjugate adjectives in the 1st or 2nd declensions, you compare the endings of the the adjective with those of the noun you are describing.

THE ADJECTIVE BONUS

  • Nom. Bonus, bona, bonum, boni, bonae, bona
  • Gen. Boni, Bonae, boni, Bonorum, bonarum, bonorum
  • Dat. Bono, bonae, bono, bonis, bonis, bonis
  • Acc. Bonum, bonam, bonum, bonos, bonas, bona
  • Abl. Bono, bona, bono, bonis, bonis, bonis

For adjectives in the third declension, use the same number case and gender of the noun you are describing even though the endings may not match.

  • Nom. Fortis, fortis, forte, fortes, fortes, fortia
  • Gen. Fortis, fortis, fortis, fortium, fortium, fortium
  • Dat. Forti, forti, forti, fortibus, fortibus, fortibus
  • Acc. Fortem, fortem, forte, fortes, fortes, fortia
  • Abl. Forti, forti, forti, fortibus, fortibus, fortibus
