IRREGULAR VERBS AND INFINITIVES

IRREGULAR VERBS

  • Verbs whose second part is irregular
  • Don't belong to a specific conjugation
  • Always pairs with an infinitive
  • Ex. Nolo, volo, possum

INFINITIVES

  • 2nd part of a verb
  • Translates as "to _____"
  • Pairs with irregular verbs
  • Pairs with verbs that take a Dative
  • Ex. Amare, effugere, dormire, currere

Infinitive endings

  • 1st Declension = are
  • 2nd Declension = (long) ere
  • 3rd Declension = ere
  • 4th Declension = ire 

FOR EXAMPLE...

  • Kira potest pulsare canem- Kira wants to punch the dog.
  • Gayatri vult laudare canem- Gayatri wants to praise the dog.
  • Petra non vult interficere canem- Petra does not want to kill the dog.
  • Necesse est mihi dormire- It is necessary for me to sleep.
  • Non commodus est tibi cantare- It is not convenient for you to sing.

To Translate...

  • Grumio potest laborare in culina.
  • Bregans vult dormire, et non vult laborare.
  • Melissa non vult cantare.

Translations

  • Grumio is able to work in the kitchen.
  • Bregans wants to sleep, and doesn't want to work.
  • Melissa doesn't want to sing.
