By using a simile, Lauryn Hill helps readers understand her confidence by comparing herself to a civil rights leader (Betty Shabazz).
Using the imagery of winter turning to spring, the reader can visualize that she is referring to change with her lyrics.

Sound Technique

  • Repetition: "Everything is everything"

Lauryn Hill repeats "Everything is everything" numerous times in order to draw attention to the concept. She wants readers to consider that the world is meant to be the way it is, and by repeating it, the reader might better understand it.
