My PD Journey

Why effective PD?
My reasons/inspirations for doing this presentation. Teachers ARE already doing things on their own, but I wanted a better way to recognize that school-wide. And to see what was "effective" or not.

Guiding Questions

  • What are teachers doing for PD on their own?
  • What makes PD effective? Is this different for different teachers?
  • How is effective PD measured?
I developed the SPACE framework for PD as part of a presentation earlier this year, mainly seeking answers to these questions:
- What PD are teachers doing on their own, and what, of that, is effective for them?
- Does it look different for independent vs. public school teachers? Is it different for every teacher?
- How is this whole concept of something being effective or not measured? By whether teachers liked it? If it gets teachers to try new things? By if it affected their students in some positive way, etc?

Research

I gathered information about PD from:
- webinars, conferences, and other PD I've attended
- research others have done (2014 Gates study, 2016 EdWeb study)
- other independent school administrators (informally)
- survey of teachers & admin at ind schools (asked to name what they considered PD in the last year and what of that was most effective)

The SPACE framework for professional development gives teachers SPACE for their own professional growth!

Effective PD is:
- Specific
- Participatory
- Acknowledged
- Continuing
- Encouraging

 

SPECIFIC
- Most common response to Q2 on my survey mentioned something about the PD being directly related to the person’s field
- EdWeb survey had similar findings
- Gates study cited PD specific to content areas as the most effective- both from a teacher satisfaction side, and effective student achievement. (Gates 2014)
- This is tough to do for every faculty member! But there ARE tools out there that make it possible... if you're giving teachers SPACE to use them.

 

PARTICIPATORY
- ideas & resources are exchanged and incorporated into instruction
- technology can help here: with organizing the content and making it searchable
- On my survey, the second most common response mentioned something about networking with others in the field: observing, discussing best practice, etc. In fact, many times this was mentioned as the most effective part of a conference or training.

 

ACKNOWLEDGED
- valued by the teacher and some other community
- when there is choice involved, there is more buy-in, and it leads to empowering teachers to keep going
- many platforms provide rewards (badges, certificates, etc.); to be the most meaningful, this recognition has to be part of some kind of community

 

CONTINUING
- reflection
- follow-through
- 2014 Gates study found that teachers want PD that is sustained over at least one semester or year.
- What could that look like for your school? What if the application IS The PD?
- Good PD should trigger additional opportunities for learning.

 

ENCOURAGING
- Great PD encourages a sense of community.
- Great PD helps participants feel comfortable because it meets them at their level, but also stretches them a little.
- It is possible to curate your own community and turn that into your PD (many educators have done this with Twitter for example- see 2011 Twitter study).
- Great PD makes it apparent there is learning going on in the community (in-person or virtual).

I signed up for Twitter on the last day of the ICE Conference several years ago, so now is a good time to sign up!

 

All 5 components of the SPACE framework need to work together! You can't have one without the other.
Many times, variety is key.

Not every PD must include all 5 areas; however, think about these things when choosing PD for yourself or your school. These aspects can be cultivated within your school, if the PD doesn't include something outright.

LEARNING, CREATING, & COLLABORATING IN SPACE

I created the Learn Create Collaborate platform along with the SPACE framework.

The Learn portion is where you will learn about the topic. It may involve watching a video, reading a short article, or something similar.

Here, you will be asked to create something related to the Learn section. This may include writing a lesson plan, drawing something, or using an app to create something.

To show that you have completed this portion (and be eligible for prizes!), you will turn your work in via Google Classroom.

One goal of this program is to encourage collaboration among our entire faculty. The final step in each module is to share and discuss. We will use a private Google Plus Community for this.

Prizes!

When a teacher completes all 3 components of a module (L, C, and C), they are rewarded with a small prize. Most prizes are inexpensive, are related to the module topic, and encourage continued learning. I will give some examples as we go through the modules.

Why an online, self-guided model?

Why are we doing LCC?
- low PD budget (just a little grant money for prizes)
- not given much PD time (1 day in April!)
- teachers are VERY busy

E - they appreciate doing it on their own time, at their own pace; the more people do it, the more of a community it becomes

Expansion Ideas

  • More modules
  • place for staff to show their own PD
  • increase participation!
Ideas for building on the LCC platform that I would like to pursue.
- modules I want to add: global education, VR/expeditions, maker education, Forms/quizzes
- place for staff to show they've learned, created, & collaborated on something
- participation has not been as much as I'd like (but my school has a lot going on right now)
