How did TAs hear about the opportunity?

The great news is that you all of started to recruit your own TAs at a higher at rate than ever before.

So you guys are doing your job well, but let's talk more in depth about roles.

Jules--do we have the specific number of students who were recruited by an instructor?

TA PROCESS TIMELINE

  • Recruitment
  • Instructor Request for Teaching Assistant Form (Look for this email in November!!)
  • Placement
  • Orientation Training
  • One to One Meetings with Anna
  • Mid-Semester Training
  • Evaluations
The TA Process operates in a cyclical fashion.

1. Recruitment is happening all-year-round. I will get to why you are such an important piece of this in a couple of minutes.

2. Instructor Request for Teaching Assistant Form is sent out right after the Instructor List has been finalized.

4. We hold 3 orientation trainings: 2 for in-class TAS & new this fall a training tailored to Online TAs.

TA REQUIREMENTS

  • Have completed the Field Experience course with a passing grade of C- or higher.

REQUIREMENTS

Our TAs are UMN undergrads, although we have an occasional alumni supporting an instructor.

PLACEMENT CRITERIA

  • Instructor Request for Teaching Assistant
  • TA Schedule Availability
  • TA + Instructor Experience
  • Single-instructor vs. Co-instructors
In specific reference to instructors solidifying the placement of their own TA, we have come across a challenge in that sometimes students will reference a conversation instead of an actual placement verification.

If you have a conversation with a TA, be sure that you have mutually agreed to work together. You, as the instructor, hold the authority in placing a TA in this manner.

Profile of TAs Recruited for Fall 2015

About 2/3 of our TA Community for this coming Fall semester is chosen by you! 63% of our TAs were handpicked by our instructor community. This is awesome!

Flip-flop from last year when we had 31% instructor-selected to 69% general applicant.

2:30

ROLES: TA

  • Complete pre-work and attend training.

  • Act as the intentional bridge between instructor and student.
  • Attend additional trainings offered by other departments throughout the University: optional but recommended!

Really put to practice OII. TAs are encouraged to be active and intervene when they think it is the right thing for the class.

ULM Teaching-Team Vision
------------
No matter your role, you learn WITH your teaching team and students, the act of learning is simultaneous for all involved, and that learning could not exist for one with out the other. Everyone (student, instructor, TA) brings various gifts, talents, strengths and edges to the contexts in which we exist.
