Leadership Stages

Published on Jan 20, 2017

Because I have a background in Early Childhood Development, Human Development, Moderate Disabilities, Reading, and Behavior Therapy, I see much of life through the lens of almost everything happening in stages. I believe there are stages of leadership that we must "go through to get through", with plenty of obstacles, bad weather, rough terrain, and maybe even hidden predators waiting to scare you off. Yet, equipped with the right gear, knowledge of the terrain, and a good map, you can reach your destination, and enjoy the new perspective.

You guessed it, I love the outdoors, thus, the hiking metaphor. It could have been worse, I also love dogs, gardening, and sailing...

I'm Karen Popp, Inclusion Facilitator and Behavior Therapist at Bigelow Middle School in Newton. I also am a White Ally, Special Education Consultant, and Reading Specialist. I'm honored to be a part of Cohort 15.

Here are the Leadership Stages I see.

ENVISION

This is where you begin. Envision where you want to end up and what you want to achieve.

FIND A PATH

Your path is determined by the largest obstacles, not the trail that is already groomed. Figure out what you need to be equipped for and gather resources.

EXPLORE ALL VIEWS

Sometimes the most unusual perspectives can lead to amazing things.

BUILD BRIDGES

CREATE SUPPORTS
Make connections with those who are disconnected and make sure they have supports strongly in place.

ADOPT A POSITIVE MINDSET

DON'T THINK "WE CAN'T."
REALIZE WE CAN'T YET...
PERSEVERE.

GET OUT THERE AND DO IT

Get out and be involved in the process. Learn from the experience.

REFLECT

Take time to review data, get feedback and reflect.

GROW YOUR TEAM

KEEP YOUR CONNECTIONS

BROADEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE

Take in the view. It will inspire new challenges.

NEW DIRECTIONS

ASSEMBLE A STRONG CREW

LEAD
