LEANING TOWER OF PISA

LOCATION

  • The leaning tower is in Pisa, Italy
  • The location is 44°N, 90°W

Human or Physical?
It's both because it was man made but what made this tower special is because of nature. The soil on the ground made the tower tilt the way it is tilted now.

WHEN IT WAS BUILT

  • The tower was built in 1173 and finished in 1372.
  • It was the third and final structure of the city's cathedral complex

HOW WAS IT MADE

  • Bonanno Pisano built it but what made the tower tilt was the soil
  • It was made of white marbel

HISTORY

  • 3 of the 8 stories were built until the uneven ground was noticed
  • At the time, war broke out on the Italian-city states & construction stopped for almost a century
  • The pause allowed the towers foundation to settle into the ground and stopped the towers early collapse
  • Construction stopped and restarted twice over those 199 years due to the wars
  • The tower was at 5.5 degrees, but after they fixed it, the angle was reduced to 3.97 degrees

STRUCTURE

  • Twin spiral cases leading to the towers bell chambers
  • The tower is eight stories high (185 feet tall)
  • The largest bell was nearly 8,000 pounds, but they weren't rung because the tower would tilt more
  • The tower weighs 14,500 tons
  • There are 7 bells in the chamber, one bell for each of the musical major scale
