WHAT CAUSES IT?

  • Genetics-increases risk if it’s in the family history
  • Prenatal and neonatal risks- premature births, exposure to drugs and alcohol in the womb, Low birth weight
  • Psychological trauma-abuse in early childhood can affect brain development and increase the risk.
  • Physical trauma- hate injuries or nervous system problems.
  • Environmental exposure- exposure to high levels of toxins such as lead.

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Poor decoding skills
  • Poor/slow reading
  • Poor comprehension
  • Difficulty integrating ideas
  • Weak vocabulary
  • Difficulty understanding words or grammar
  • Better Oral comprehension
  • Difficulty focusing on attention on “printed marks
  • Bad eye movement control
  • Frequent spelling errors
  • Poor handwriting
  • Poor alignment
  • Difficulty with instructions

Heritability
A good proportion of children with learning disabilities have a underlying genetic cause

Treatment
It has no cure but figuring it out early can be beneficial in lessening the effects of the disorder. For certain disorders there is medication.
