WHO IS MY EXPLORER?
Lief was born in 980 A.D. and his dad was Erik the Red.
Born in Iceland.
They never learned to read or write.
Lief died in 1025 and he was about 45 years old.
They were called Vikings.
Leif’s dad got banished from Iceland to Greenland because he killed 2 men.

He wanted to explore because he heard stories about another Viking named Bjarni Herjolfsson and his explorations.
Left Greenland because it was getting too crowded.
Discovered Labrador.
Discovered Baffin Island.
Discovered Newfoundland.

He explored in the northern part if North America.
He discovered Vinland which is now Newfoundland.
He discovered Markland which is now
Labrador.It
had a lot of forests.
He discovered Helluland which is now Baffin Island. It was a big stone slab with glaciers.
He explored Greenland and Iceland too.

People think he started exploring in 1002 until died.
985 went to Greenland to live with his dad.
He died when he was about 45 years old.

His nickname is now “Leif the lucky”
He got the nickname because he is a good man because he saved 15 people on a island.
USA President Lyndon B. Johnson created Leif Eriksson day and it is on October 9.

Leif was a good explorer but his dad Erik the Red shouldn’t have killed someone.
Leif was brave because he saved 15 people on an island.
Leif was principled because he tried very hard to find new and undiscovered places.
