LEMON SHARKS

RANGE

  • Found off the Southeastern coast in the United States
  • Also found in groups off the Gulf Coast
  • They migrate in the summer months to places such as West Africa

HABITAT

  • Subtropical shallow water
  • Found in depths up to 300 feet
  • They live in coral reefs, mangroves, enclosed bays, and river mouths

REPRODUCTION

  • Males and females travel long distances to find mates
  • The females give live birth and have anywhere from four to fourteen pups
  • Females birth in shallow water
  • The pups are on their own once out of the mother's womb

FEEDING

  • Lemon sharks eat various kinds fish that are typically small
  • They also feed on mollusks and crustaceans
  • Large amounts of food are not needed to sustain them

CHARACTERISTICS

  • They are loners or live in small groups
  • There have only been 22 reported attacks on humans
  • Lemon sharks have magnetic sensors on their nose
  • They have poor eyesight
  • Typically they are small in size
