PRESENTATION OUTLINE

LENTICULAR GALAXIES

DEF: THE GALAXY STAGE BETWEEN ELLIPTICAL AND THE SPIRALS

DESCRIPTION

  • Similar to spirals and ellipticals
  • Central buldge of stars
  • Evolved from elliptical
  • Usually very bright

FACTS

  • 15-20% of all galaxies are lenticular
  • When viewed on the edge it looks like a lense
  • Mostly made up of old, red starts

LOCATION

  • Some theories suggest that they are found where galaxies collide
  • Found usually in the center of Galaxy groups and clusters

HOW IT FORMS

  • There are multiple theories but one theory states that 2 old spiral galaxies join and create a lenticular galaxy
