One of the most known stories is about a young girl named Anne Frank. During the Holocaust her and her family stayed in hiding. As they were hidden she kept a diary that is now a very inspiring book for the world to read.

May 1940
Germany has now invaded Beligum, France, and The Netherlands. Jews are required to register and not allowed to own any businesses.

Times are hard for the Jews. They are no longer allowed to use bicycles, public transportation, or ride in any automobiles. They are not allowed to go to the movies, and are forced to go to an all Jew school. Many places have banners prohibiting Jews from entering. Jews are now being arrested and taken to concentration camps.

A week later the Van Pals family moves into the annex with the Franks. Soon after Fritz Pfeffer (Mr.Dussel) goes into hiding. This makes a total of 8 people in a very small space.

The Frank family has help while they are in hiding. Miep Gies, a worker at Otto's former business, and Victor Kugler, also a worker at the business, provides the family with food and supplies.

In Anne's diary, Anne writes about the problems in the annex. With limited food and little space, this is not surprising. But she also speaks about her developing relationship with 16 year old Peter Van Pals and her arguments with her mother Edith.

Although Anne thinks they have it hard, they are actually very lucky to have what they have. While Anne is in hiding, most Jews were being arrested and sent to concentration camps everyday. There they are likely to die from disease and starvation, or be killed.

After the war, Otto is the only one to survive out of the 2 familys. The rest have died in camps from disease, starvation, or have been killed.

When Otto returns to Amsterdam he receives Anne's diary that she had kept. He soon publishes it for the world to read.

Although Anne did not survive, her legacy lives on. Anne's diary has been read by millions of people around the world. It gives people a sense of inspiration and hope. It portrays the message of accepting people for who they are and not trying to change them.

Today, the secret annex is now a museum open to the public. Over a million people have visited. Anne's diary has also been made into plays, and many movies. Students still learn about the Holocaust every year in schools around the world.
