CEZANNE'S PORTS BY: ALLEN GINSBERG
In the foreground we see time and life
swept in a race
toward the left hand side of the picture
where shore meets shore.

CEZANNE'S PORTS
But that meeting place
isn't represented;
it doesn't occur on the canvas
4.
CEZANNE'S PORTS
For the other side of the bay
is Heaven and Eternity,
with a bleak white haze over its mountains

CEZANNE'S PORTS
And the immense water of L'Estaque is a go-between
for minute rowboats.

OBSERVATIONS: POEM
Poem uses connotation with the word 'go-between' because it goes beyond its literary meaning
Poem uses Enjambment to continue grammar from line to line
The poems seems to be written from a group perspective, as it uses the word 'we'
Imagery parallels 'time and life' and 'Heaven and Eternity

OBSERVATIONS: ARTWORK
Houses fade into the background
Village is warm colors and the rest of the painting is cool colors
The smoke from the chimney could also be perceived as a wave
No sun in the sky
The little house near the end of the village looks like it could fall into the water
10.
L'ESTAQUE
Cezanne actually painted over 20 paintings of the small fishing village of L'Estaque
This particular painting is called The Bay Of Marseilles, Seen From L'Estaque
It is done in oil on canvas and measures 31 5/8 x 39 5/8 in
It was done by Paul Cezanne in 1885
This was a view from a window in the building Cezanne resided in

CONNECTIONS
Ginsberg mentions that the shore is not on the canvas, but heavily implied to be there
Hills/Mountains in the background are 'Heaven and Eternity', while the bay in the foreground is 'time and life'
Village in the foreground is not really mentioned in the poem
Go-Between for boats refers to going through the bay or stopping in L'Estaque
