LEWIS & CLARK

The Men Behind the Expedition

MERIWETHER LEWIS

Meriwether Lewis joined the military as a young man.

Thomas Jefferson had asked Meriwether Lewis, age 27, to be his personal secretary.

Meriwether Lewis had met William Clark while in the military.

Meriwether Lewis traveled to Philadelphia before the expedition and studied plants, animals, planets, medicine, and stars.

Meriwether Lewis had brought a traveling library along the expedition.

WILLIAM CLARK

William Clark is famous for not being a good speller.

William Clark joined the military at 19 years of age and fought Native Americans along the Ohio Frontier.

Clark's rank was lower than Lewis's, so when Clark was offered a position on the expedition, his rank was to be increased to match Lewis's. (The War Department refused to increase his rank.)

After the War Department refused to change Clark's rank, Lewis and Clark decided to keep their ranks a secret from the other men.

William Clark recruited an enslaved man named York, who had been his childhood friend.
