ORIGIN OF THE MOVEMENT

  • In 1924 Henrey Gerber founded the Society for human rights, the first gay rights organization. Founded in Chicago, it was the first organization in the U.S.
  • Gerber had come up with his idea for the group while serving in the U.S army.
  • Henrey had a news letter he created for gay interest called, “Friendship and Freedom”. Police raids caused them to disband in 1925.
  • 10 years later Henrey Gerber home was turned into a landmark.

THE pINK TRIANGLE

In 1950 Harry Hay founded the Mattachine Foundation. Which then was America’s first gay rights group. He was a large Gay Rights activist especially during the Stonewall riots.
