Library Catalogs

No one searches catalogs like librarians

Literally.

Librarians are about the search.
Everyone else wants to find what they are looking for.

Technology should be about access.

OPACs needs to be easier to use, include more extensive tutorials that are easily available from the search results, for example, Guide on the Side.

Current library technologies often obstruct findability.

Change is inevitable

Libraries need to become more effective at assisting customers.

Catalogs need to prioritize finding over searching.

Enable content creation

In 2012, then high school student Jack Andraka created a new test for pancreatic, ovarian and lung cancers that was cheaper and faster than the standard tests.

This year, Amelia Hamrick discovered music in the hell panel of Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights. She posted it on her Tumblr and suddenly everyone knew about what she called "The Butt Song From Hell."

Students are no longer simply consumers of information, but also the creators. Libraries must support this.
