Religion

  • Evangelical Christians were influential in society
  • Organized religion was more important then than it is today
  • However, 50% of the population didn't go to church every Sunday

Work

  • Factories grew in numbers
  • Women and children worked in unjust conditions
  • Inventors improved life for the citizens
  • Steam engine and motor, anesthetics, sewing and weaving machines, etc.
  • Most people made between £300 and £25

Families

  • Many children worked to help prove for the families
  • Child labor and abuse was occuring
  • Later, children had to be educated before they could work
  • Families lived in crowded apartments or tenements
  • Everyone in the family worked (mother, father, and children)

  • High Economy
  • Entrepreneurs invested in new technologies
  • Industrial Revolution began
  • Although money increased, the quality of work conditions decreased

  • Consumption - tuberculosis of the lungs
  • Typhus - bacterial disease spread by lice
  • Cholera - slowing of the blood circulation
  • Diseases were easily spread with the closeness of people and dirty conditions
