DRIVING QUESTION

  • How can we create a cultural fair to highlight the diversity in America?
  • How do these different cultures form a country?

HISTORY

  • Australia's people were to have arrived here by boat from SE Asia.
  • They were scattered in 300 clans and spoke 250 languages.
  • Each clan had a spiritual connection with a specific piece of land.
  • Despite the diversity, all Aboriginal people share a belief.
  • The spirit ancestors continue to connect through every aspect of Australia.

GEOGRAPHY

  • Location: Oceania, continent between the Indian & South Pacific Ocean.
  • Area - comparative: slightly smaller than the US contiguous 48 state
  • Climate: generally arid to semiarid ; temperate in South & East ; tropical in North.
  • Terrain: mostly low plateau with deserts ; fertile plain in Southeast.

LANGUAGES

HOUSING

  • Australia offers a wide range of housing options.
  • The range is from a single house to a house on large blocks of land.
  • Typically, Australians want to have their own house and land.
  • They will often rent before they choose to buy a home.
  • The price of housing will vary a lot between cities and within each city.
Most people live in the suburbs of the state capital cities. They like to live close to where they work, go to schools, access community facilities and use leisure ideas. Country towns and regional cities are smaller and widely separated.
Life in a country town is more relaxed and less expensive than in a big city. Housing is more available for people who choose to work and live in towns away from capital cities.

  • Collette Dinnigan & Ken Done are the hottest fashion designers in Australia.
  • The fashion tends to be relaxed and playful, thanks to the warm climate.
  • Designers include: graphic & fashion designers, jewelers, and textile makers.
  • Australia's fashion and design will surprise, amaze, and impress you.

  • They eat kangaroo, emu, and crocodile meat.
  • Chefs make their meats more healthier and less greasy.
  • Kangaroo meat is very popular with overseas visitors.
  • Australia grows all kinds of fruits, veggies, and crops all year round.

RELIGION

CULTURAL TRADITIONS

  • Australia Day, January 26, is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships.
  • All of the Australians come together to celebrate being Australians & what's great about them.
  • Eureka Stockade, December 3, was when the Australians were divided rather than be united.
  • The Eureka Stockade has some associations with unionism &white supremacy.
  • Like an opal, the dates defract light to produce a spectrum of colours.
While this bothers those who want unity, conformity, morality and something to salute, it gives individual Australians the freedom to really define what Australia means to them.
