Life in the Ghettos

The Holocaust started when a german man named Hitler decided that jewish people were not pure. Hitler wanted all jewish people to be out of Germany.

The first ghetto that was made was in Piotrków Trybunalski, Poland in October 1939.

The Warsaw Ghetto was in the city of Warsaw. Almost 400,000 Jews were forced by the Nazis to live in that space that was barely 1.3 miles big during World War ll.

The term "ghetto" came from the name of the jewish quarter in Venice, Italy. There are three types of ghettos. They are open ghetto, closed ghetto, and destruction ghetto.

Jews were forced to go to concentration camps. If they tried to leave the concentration camp they would get shot.

In the camps the Jews had to work, they were tortured, and then they were killed. They also lived in really small spaces and barely got food.

The Jews slept in really small wooden beds that didn't have mattresses. They also had to sleep more than one person in a bed.

The Holocaust lasted from January 1933 to May 1945. In this time about six million Jews were killed by the Nazis.
