Food in the trenches was scarce and diseased. Rats would clamber all over it, often eating it as they moved. For this reason, soldiers would put food on their bayonets as bait and fire when the time was right. Food was rationed but, with so many soldiers, people would't get much.
Going over the top This was possibly the most terrifying part of trench life. Often, soldiers would go 'over the top' (of the trench) in an attempt to claim the enemy tench. The first to go over were almost certainly killed instantly. Espionage was poor or non-existent, so knowledge of whether the enemy had Gatling guns was difficult to find.
