LAWS ABOUT FOOD-KASHRUT
A set of food restrictions. Rules about what Jewish people can eat
Food that is allowed to be eaten is called Kosher
Certain foods must be separated when eaten (dairy and meat)
Food preparation (killing an animal)
Crops must be separated when grown

LAWS ABOUT FOOD-KASHRUT- KILLING AN ANIMAL TO EAT
Animals cannot be sick, injured, or dead
Blade must be sharp enough to cut without pain
Cut the animals throat and drain the blood
Blood is not kosher
Examine animal for disease. Remove blood vessels, nerves, fat of inner organs

Pigs are used because they are unclean

Celebrates the exodus
When the Jews left slavery in Egypt

Matzoh- unleavened bread- represents how quickly the Jews had to leave
Maro- bitter herbs- represents the bitterness of slavery
Charoses- mixture nuts, apples, wine, cinnamon- represents the mortar of construction while in slavery
Beitzah- roasted egg- represents life
Karpas- veggies and salt water represents the tears that they cried

Zeroah- roasted lamb shank-represents sacricial offerings
Wine- 4 glasses of wine to represent the four fold promise of redemption
They leave an extra glass for Elijah

Celebrates the anniversary of it's the 10 commandments
Dairy is consumed because:
Eating represents re-birth
children are given milk to feed their body like the word of God feeds our soul
Represents the promised land that flows with Milk and Honey

CELEBRATIONS-ROSH HASHANAH-JEWISH NEW YEAR
Head of a fish- ancient symbol for fertility
Apples and honey- represents good living and wealth
Round challah (bread)- shaped into spirals to represent cycle of life
Honey cake- represents wishes for a sweet new year
New fruit- a fruit that just ripened- reminds us to appreciate the fruit of the earth

CELEBRATIONS-YOM KIPPUR- DAY OF ATONEMENT
Fasting holiday- Jews are not to eat food.
A day to Seek forgiveness of sins
Jews who do not regularly attend synagogue are welcomed back
The lack of food helps focus the individual on God and one's blessings

Food is important to the Jewish community
Used in celebrations
Many times food is symbolic
Using food in scripture would help early Christians understand the message of Jesus
