"I looked about for my family, for survivors, for another life boat, for anything that might bring me hope" (Martel, 144).

In this chapter, Pi finds himself stranded in the Pacific Ocean after a violent storm. He later finds shelter on a life boat. Looking around, he tries to find life or some existence around him that ok give him hope.

I never thought that finding myself confined in a small space with a spotted hyena would be good news, but there you go" (Martel 147).

In this part of the chapter Pi is now discovering the multiple animals that are with him on the life boat. With his emotions stirred, he tries to find the bright side of things. Many of his thoughts go to the appreciation of his life.

"It was the dawn of a beautiful day in the Pacific Ocean" (Martel 147).

In this part of the chapter, Pi is happy that the night is over and that he made it to the next day. Pi is started to calm down and appreciate the luck he has had in surviving the recent tragedy. Though still shaken, he continues his journey.

"She came floating on an island of bananas in a halo of light, as lovely as the Virgin Mary" (Martel 149).

In this part of the chapter, Pi begins to hallucinate from being out in the ocean so long. He pictures the Virgin Mary coming towards him on an island of bananas when its actually just a monkey from the sunken ship. He is going insane.

"She was in a state of profound shock" (Martel 150).

In this part of the chapter, Pi seeing the Orange Juice, the monkey, in shock made him shocked. He is now coming to the realization in which he is not the only one who does not understand what is going on. Being stranded on this boat has given him time to think.

"We would be rescued soon" (Martel 151).

In this part of the chapter, Pi has an epiphany in which he begins to believe that someone will come out to save him. He imagines all these different pilots in their planes hovering over the ocean looking for him and the sunken ship. This false hope encourages his morale.

"My only reaction was to freeze with fear" (Martel 152).

In this part of the chapter, the hyena comes out from under the tarpaulin and he once again, he is faced with fear. In a state of panic, the hyena started running around the zebra. Not knowing how to access the situation he freezes with fear.

"I'm not one to hold a prejudice against any animal but it is a plain fact that the spotted hyena is not well served by its appearance" (Martel 154).

In this part of the chapter, Pi explains that he not prejudice towards any animal but then goes on to insult the hyena. In this instance he is mainly insulting the hyena out of fear and disrespect because. Pi knows the hyena will strike either he or the zebra so he keeps his distance.

"I spent the entire day perched on the oar, moving only as much as was necessary to stay balanced" (Martel, 157).

In this part of the chapter, Pi becomes irritated by his surroundings. At one instance he is stuck in the middle of the ocean, but on top of that is coined near a boat full of wild animals. He starts to become annoyed by the flies that have started to surround him.

"With the very raise of light, it came alive in me: hope" (Martel 159).

In this part of the chapter, Pi is encouraged by the light of the morning and starts his day with hope. He starts missing his family and begins to reminisce on the thought of finding land. Every time he makes it through the night he starts the next day filled with hope.

"Despite the tragedy afflicting me, despite not feeling well, I let out a laugh" (Martel 161).

In this part of the chapter, Pi is realizing that Orange Juice is sick and is walking around the boat like a drunken person. He begins to laugh because he finds the way she is acting funny. This laughter, not forced, helps him through the day.

"Immediately blood poured fourth like a river" (Martel 165).

In this part of the chapter, the hyena on the life boat attacks the zebra. The hyena rips off the leg of the zebra and Orange Juice starts to go crazy. Pi sits back in fear.

"It made my heart melt with love and admiration and fear" (Martel 170).

In this part of the chapter, Orange Juice hit the hyena in the head. Pi was happy because Orange Juice stood up for him. Though, he was also scared because he knew that the Hyena would go after him or Orange Juice.
