PROPERTIES OF MATTER

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: WHAT IS MATTER MADE OF?

MATTER

  • Anything that takes up space All matter is made up of atoms multiply the number of molecules your making 2H2O = 4 atoms hydrogen, 2 atoms oxygen

ATOM

  • The smallest unit of a chemical element
  • Each atom consists of a nucleus, which has a positive charge, and a set of electrons that move around the nucleus

ELEMENT

  • Each element is made of only one kind of atom There are about 120 elements EX Of Elements Hydrogen (H2) Oxygen (O2) Carbon (C) Nitrogen (N2) Iron (Fe) Aluminum (AI) Gold (Au) Calcium (Ca)

PERIODIC TABLE

  • Periodic Table - A list of all the chemical elements that exist in the universe ( that have been discovered by humans so far) Categories, organizes elements according to the properties of their atoms

MOLECULE

  • Formed when 2 or more atoms join together These may be 2 of the same atom or 2 different atoms

COMPOUND

  • Formed when 2 or more DIFFERENT atoms are joined together All compounds are also molecules, but not all molecules are compounds Example of compounds: CO2 NaCL H2O2 Non-compounds: O2 H2 These aren’t compounds because they are the same atom

SUBSCRIPT (S)

  • Tells you how many “atoms” of each element for that molecule EX: H2 = 2 atoms hydrogen EX: H2O = 2 atoms hydrogen, 1 atom oxygen

COEFFICIENTS

  • Multiply the number of molecules your making 2H2O = 4 atoms hydrogen, 2 atoms oxygen
