LIGHTNING FACTS

  • Lightning- Lightning is a sudden electrostatic discharge during an electrical storm between electrically charged regions of a cloud .

  • There are many types of lightning; cloud to ground, cloud to cloud, heat lightning, ball lightning, and many more.
  • The picture shown is ball lightning.

LIGHTNING FACTS CONT.

  • Around one quarter of lightning is from cloud to ground.
  • When lightning strikes the ground it seeks out the shortest route to The something with a positive charge, this might be a tree, a tall building or if they’re very unlucky, a person.
  • Thousands of people are struck by lightning every year.

LIGHTNING SAFETY

  • NO PLACE outside is safe when thunderstorms are in the area!
  • If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you.
  • When you hear thunder, immediately move to safe shelter: a substantial building with electricity or plumbing or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with windows up.

INDOOR LIGHTNING SAFETY

  • Stay off corded phones, computers and other electrical equipment that put you in direct contact with electricity.
  • Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
  • Avoid plumbing, including sinks, baths and faucets.

OUTDOOR LIGHTNING SAFETY

  • Immediately get off elevated areas such as hills, mountain ridges or peaks
  • Never lie flat on the ground
  • NEVER take shelter under a tree.
  • Stay away from lakes, rivers, and ponds.
  • If you're outside during a lightning storm get in a ditch and make yourself as small as you can get.

FUN FACTS

  • The average temperature for lightning is 20000 degrees celsius.
  • You are more likely to be struck by lightning than to be eaten by a shark.
  • Lightning strikes within 1 to 2 micro seconds.
