PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Liquid Ventilation

  • By Zach Wallace

Brief History

  • During the first World War studies were conducted to help aid victims of deadly gas attacks. These victims were treated with basic saline solutions leading to the study of Liquid Ventilation.
  • On a side note this Liquid Ventilation technique was going to be used to escape crashed submarines.

Where is this in the World?

  • Well, as the science behind it has progressed more and more since the first World War we see the Liquid Ventilation being used to treat those with damaged lungs
  • As well as this technique there is another use for Liquid Ventilation ans that is the exploration of the deep sea.

Science behind it!

  • Perfluorocarbons (PFC) are the base compound for this technique to work as it is the only non lethal way of using the Liquid Ventilation method.
  • PFCs are organic compounds in which all hydrogen atoms have been replaced by halogens, usually being fluoride.

How does this relate to you?

  • Unfortunately this may not be apart of your daily life and maybe not even your future. But this topic is important if you go into the field of marine biology as depicted in the popular Sci-Fi movie "The Abyss" or if you intend on being a pulmonologist.
  • But who knows maybe you'll be the next person to use the technique of Liquid Ventilation
